Ggantija Temples in Xaghra, Gozo, are some of the most important archaeological sites in Europe. The origins of Ggantija date back to c.3600 BC which is much earlier than the pyramids of Egypt and even Stonehenge. It is one of the earliest stone monuments in the world.
The gigantic dimensions of the megaliths led some locals to believe that the Islands' temples, in particular Ggantija, were the work of giants. Ggantija is Maltese for giant.
